Unfortunately, there are probably many other barracks out
there just like these at Fort Bragg. But these conditions
actually remind me of life as a Marine aboard a Navy LHA. I
remember we ran out of toilet paper, so Marines resorted to
using t-shirts and pillow cases in place of toilet paper.
Well, the ship's plumbing system barely handled toilet
paper... it sure wasn't going to handle t-shirts and pillow
cases. It wasn't too long before the heads (bathrooms) were
flooded with sewage complete with little turds floating
around. I'm glad I wasn't ever on watch duty whenever this
would happen. I remember one poor soul who was ordered into
the head to retrieve the turds. The guy donned rubber boots, a
gas mask, a small hand broom and a dust pan so that he could
scoop the turds into the dust pan. Later, a sailor came down
with a high-pressure hose to flush the system out. However one
time the flushing backfired and blew up in the sailor's face,
leaving him covered in poop.

First Enlistment Contract with Biometric Signature

U.S. Department of Defense

Md., poses with the electronic Army enlistment contract she
signed with her fingerprint as she became the first person to
enlist in the U.S. military using biometric signatures. Photo

The Department of Defense announced today (4/17/08) the
signing of the first military enlistment contract using
biometric technology at the Baltimore Military Entrance
Processing Station (MEPS), located at Fort Meade, Md.
Eliminating the traditional “wet” signature using a pen, an
applicant simply places an index finger on a special reader
that records the fingerprint on an electronic enlistment
contract, making the enlistment official. The enlistment
contract becomes a part of the service member’s permanent
electronic personnel record.
The biometric signing of the contract is the first step in a
multi-year effort by the U. S. Military Entrance Processing
Command (USMEPCOM) to leverage technology in a way that
streamlines applicant enlistment processes and eliminates the
more than 70 million pieces of paper per year currently
expended.
Referred to as “e-Security,” the biometric signature protects
the integrity and heightens security of the enlistment
process, as well as paving the way to paperless enlistment
recordkeeping. The successful implementation of e-Security is
the product of a six-year effort by USMEPCOM and the project’s
prime contractor, Northrop Grumman.
The MEPS will initially obtain each applicant’s biometric at
first contact. The biometric will be used to verify the
individual’s identity and track his or her progress through
the qualification process: aptitude testing, medical
screening, background check, enlistment contracting and
departure for travel to initial entry training.
USMEPCOM determines the physical, mental, and moral
qualifications of every new member of the armed services. In
fiscal 2007, the command administered 510,000 enlistment Armed
Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests and 348,000
physical examinations, resulting in 266,000 individuals
entering the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast
Guard.

New
Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine to Lead Way in
Caring for Wounded
Source: U.S. Department of Defense
The Department of Defense announced the creation of the new,
federally-funded institution, the Armed Forces Institute of
Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM) during a briefing today at the
Pentagon.
The AFIRM will be made up of two multi-institutional
consortia, one led by Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem,
N.C., and the University of Pittsburgh; and one led by Rutgers
University, New Brunswick, N.J., and the Cleveland Clinic. The
U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research in San Antonio,
Texas, will work with these academic consortia to provide key
guidance on military medical needs and conduct trials of new
therapies.
"Therapies developed by the AFIRM project will greatly benefit
wounded warriors, as well as the civilian population with,
burns or severe trauma due to illness or injury," said Dr. S.
Ward Casscells, assistant secretary of defense for health
affairs.
The AFIRM team is committed to developing clinical therapies
over the next five years focusing on the following five areas:
- Burn repair
- Wound healing without scarring
- Craniofacial reconstruction
- Limb reconstruction, regeneration or transplantation
- Compartment syndrome, a condition related to inflammation
after surgery or injury that can lead to increased pressure,
impaired blood flow, nerve damage and muscle death
"Following in the great military medical tradition of
innovation, collaboration and progressive research, AFIRM will
unify and apply all the recent breakthroughs in regenerative
medicine while leading the charge to new ones," said Casscells.
The U. S. Army Medical Research Material Command, in
conjunction with the Office of Naval Research, the National
Institutes of Health, the Air Force Office of the Surgeon
General and the Department of Veterans Affairs will fund the
consortia.
In addition to $85 million in defense funding, an additional
$180 million from academic institutions, industry and state
and federal agencies will be contributed – for a total of more
than $250 million available for regeneration research.
"The new institute will work to develop techniques that will
help to make our soldiers whole again," explained Lt. Gen.
Eric Schoomaker, the U.S. Army surgeon general. “We’re
embarking on the next generation of research that is going to
redefine the face of Army medicine. We're doing it with
enthusiastic and skilled partners, and we're doing it for our
wounded warriors."
The AFIRM is a strong national effort to address the
unprecedented challenges of caring for service members
returning from Afghanistan and Iraq with multiple traumatic
injuries. Some of our wounded warriors face the daily
challenges of recovery from severe limb, head, face and burn
injuries that require years of treatment and may result in a
significant lifetime impairment.
In addition to developing clinical treatments, the AFIRM will
serve as a training facility to develop experts in treating
trauma with regenerative medicine and will serve as a resource
to help the military develop tissues as needs are identified.

Would you let a Nigerian prepare your taxes?
Now
I know that most Nigerians are hardworking, honest people. However those Nigerian 419 Scammers
aren't helping the Nigerian name any, especially when it comes
to me selecting a tax preparation service. You see, the local
tax preparation service office has a Nigerian, not too far
removed from Nigeria, preparing American income tax returns!
Imagine the damage he could do if he were one of those
scammers! I don't know about you, but I want an American
preparing my American tax return.
Which brings me to my second point. A lot of our financial
information - credit card information etc. - is already
overseas in call service centers. Imagine the damage that
could be done there!? Is there anything being done about that?

Marines in Afghanistan are systematically searching villages
in parts of Afghanistan in search of Taliban insurgents,
and... perhaps for Osama bin Laden himself. Though Osama is
probably across the border in Pakistan, it doesn't hurt that
U.S. forces are ruling out areas in Afghanistan as hiding
places to give more weight to the conjecture that Osama is
indeed in Pakistan. For more see:

DoD Annual Report on China Military Power
China is taking military steps to protect sea lanes that
transport vital resources.
The U.S.
Department of Defense's annual report on China's military
power is out, and although the report tries to make nice with
China, there's plenty to be concerned about. Here's one
excerpt:
"Officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)
have identified China as running an aggressive and
wide-ranging effort aimed at acquiring advanced technologies
from the United States. Similarly, officials from U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have referred to
China as the leading espionage threat to the United States.
Between 2000 and May 2006, ICE initiated more than 400
investigations involving the illicit export of U.S. arms and
technologies to China."
I work near Southern Methodist University in Dallas and I know
of several young people from China who attend the university.
It is my opinion that China is using its cash reserves to send
thousands of students to American universities to learn
American business practices and
technology. I wouldn't be surprised if many of these students
were working on official or semi-official orders from the
Chinese government or military to acquire American proprietary
information from many disciplines, including financial,
scientific and
military.

Terrorists on the Highways?
Yesterday
while driving to work on I-30 in Dallas I looked over and saw
a Taliban-looking dude with a turban and ZZ Top beard driving
an unmarked 18-wheeler down the highway. Now, I don't know if
he was an Indian Sikh, a Muslim fundamentalist or something
else. But I'll bet the driver isn't originally from Dallas, or
for that matter the United States. Apparently, there are
recent immigrants to the United States driving big rigs on the
nation's highways. Ultimately, that can't be good.
First of
all, only Americans should be driving on American streets. And
ultimately, only Americans should be living in America. But
here we have foreign nationals who owe their allegiance to
foreign countries driving weapons of mass destruction across
the country. (Remember what they did with seemingly harmless
passenger airplanes.)
Until
the late 1980s, the KGB operated an extensive trucking network
throughout Europe. With this network, the Soviets could
smuggle just about anything anywhere on the continent. I worry
that terrorist organizations could develop the same type of
network in the United States. Already, there are
well-organized transportation networks that shuttle illegal
aliens and illegal drugs throughout the country. And then
there are the semi-legitimate businesses, such as smaller
moving companies, that use illegals to transport household
effects across the
nation. Similar networks could be used by terrorists to
transport weapons of mass destruction to targets throughout
the US.
Hopefully, the United States government will soon realize this
great threat and get the foreigners off our roadways.

General Says Al Qaeda on the Ropes
A
Letter to the Editor From the Commanding General, Multi
National Force - West
By Maj. Gen. John F.
Kelly
Multi-National Forces - West
I have just had the privilege of returning to Iraq and more
specifically to Al Anbar province for my third tour. I say
privilege for a number of different reasons not the least of
which is the opportunity to again serve with young Americans -
the best of their generation - in combat. A second reason is
there is no greater honor for any man or woman than to protect
one's country in time of grave danger, while wearing the
nation's cloth. Finally, I do not think there can be anything
more gratifying on this earth for an American than to
participate in the freeing of a people from the grip of a
tyrant, then helping those same people realize the benefits of
democracy. To actually exercise the God-given rights of life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
I have been away for three years. What I have found in the
week I have been back can only be described as shocking. When
I was here last, dozens of improvised explosive devices
detonated everyday in Al Anbar. Fire fights were as common as
IEDs, and mortar and rocket attacks a nightly routine. The
emirs of al-Qaida and other equally murderous groups predicted
our imminent defeat as they pursued a sick form of extremism
no rational man or woman here, or anyplace else, could fathom.
Many in our own country for any number of reasons began to
lose faith - but the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who
fought our enemy to a standstill never doubted or waivered in
their determination to win.
Several days ago I walked through the market section of
Fallujah. It was bustling with Iraqis of all ages buying and
selling products of every description. Adults waved, pressed
forward to shake hands and many, like good businessmen
everywhere, tried to make a sale. Kids swarmed around the
Marines trying out the few English words they have learned in
schools that are all now open. Parents no longer fear to send
their boys and girls to learn, a practice that under the
extremists was often a death sentence.
When I last visited that city, it was the most dangerous place
on earth. It was a gunfight going in, and a gunfight coming
out everyday. The majority of the city's population lived in
stark terror from the most evil men on the planet. It was the
same then in Ramadi, Hadithah, and all the way along the
Euphrates River Valley to the Syrian border - but no longer.
Like Fallujah, the schools are open, markets thrive, and
post-war recovery gains momentum across Al Anbar. This war is
not won, but is being won and today primarily by the Iraqis
themselves. Al-Qaida is not defeated, but it is on the ropes.
Its membership knows that if they are foolish enough to come
out of the holes they hide in, they will not only meet tough
young Americans standing firm and unafraid, but also Iraqi
police and soldiers in vastly increased numbers and
effectiveness. Iraq is still a dangerous place, but nothing
like it was only a short time ago. We should see this thing
through because it's the right thing to do, the American thing
to do, and we have the new "Greatest Generation" in just
enough numbers willing to give up the comfort of their homes
and defend us all while spreading freedom to a people who have
never known it. (2/11/2008)

Obama to be 'Swift-Boated' on Anthem Issue?
It may be a
seemingly minor issue to some Americans, but
Barrack Hussein Obama's reluctance to put
his hand over his heart while the U.S. national anthem is
being played is a MAJOR issue to me. It's major because I
have other questions about him, and if it weren't for the
anthem issue I might trust him a little more on my other
questions about him. I have many concerns about Obama as a
democrat (higher taxes, gun control, etc.), but I have those
concerns for all democrats. However, as much as I don't want
to see Hillary in office, I have no doubt about her allegiance
to America. She's an American and I trust whole-heartedly that
she has America's best interests at heart. Obama, on the other
hand, was born to a non-American Kenyan/Muslim father and an
atheist mother.
From ages six to ten, Obama lived in Indonesia and attended
Muslim schools. His full name is close to America's most
recent hated enemies - (Saddam) Hussein and Osama (bin Laden).
And his wife, she recently said "for the first time in
my adult life, I am really proud of my country." WHAT, she
wasn't proud before her husband was a serious presidential
contender?! I've been proud all of my life!
The last election between Bush and Kerry came down to, I
believe, who would be better/stronger on national security. If
I were McCain, I'd make sure Obama's anthem issue and related
questions are front and center during the presidential
election. I'd make sure that the last thing Americans see
before entering the voting booth is the picture above.

Hillary Said Putin Has No Soul. Putin Says Hillary Has No
Head
President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin
share a light moment as they sit with Laura Bush and other
heads of state during a military parade marking the end of
World War II in Moscow's Red Square, Monday, May 9, 2005.
White House photo by Eric Draper
The more I hear about Putin, the more I like about him.
Hillary,
in a speech, said Russian President Putin doesn't have a soul,
as he was in the KGB. Putin has fired back, saying "at a
minimum, a head of state should have a head." ZING! Wow,
Hillary wants to talk about Bush's foreign policy, yet she
wants to demonize the leader of a nation that could be a
powerful ally of the United States. And by the way, Hillary,
Putin is a born-again Christian.
Funny, one of Hillary's biggest hurdles in the presidential
campaign has been convincing voters she actually has a soul.

US Jets Intercept Russian Tu-95 Bear
The US Navy
has released photos of an F/A-18 Hornet
intercepting a Russian Tu-95 Bear that neared the vicinity
of the carrier USS Nimitz transiting in the Western Pacific.
The flights are apparently posturing by Russia against the
United States as Putin believes the US is not treating Russia
as an equal partner. In August 2007, Putin
stated about the resumption of flights:
"We have decided to restore flights by Russian strategic
aviation on a permanent basis," Mr Putin told reporters at
joint military exercises with China and four Central Asian
states in Russia's Ural mountains.
"In 1992, Russia unilaterally ended flights by its strategic
aircraft to distant military patrol areas. Unfortunately, our
example was not followed by everyone," Mr Putin said, in an
apparent reference to the US.
"Flights by other countries' strategic aircraft continue and
this creates certain problems for ensuring the security of the
Russian Federation," he said."
A side note: While in the Marines during the late 1980s I was
on a Navy LHA operating near Vietnam when a
Russian bomber flew directly over the flight deck at a height of about 500
feet. It was very dramatic and
cool, and funny when many Sailors and Marines mooned the
bomber. Incidentally, even though the
Soviets were operating out of Cam Ranh Bay
at the time, the US had expressed interest to the
Vietnamese government about leasing the base at Cam Rahn Bay,
despite the debacle of the Vietnam War.
During the last Repub debate, the candidates were asked about
Putin. (McCain is already on record for saying
he sees the letters KGB when he looks into
Putin's eyes.) Huckabee wasn't very complimentary and
Romney used the words authoritarian and oppressive when
talking about Putin.
The
candidates are basing their conclusions on a very US-centric
viewpoint. Here in the States, democracy thrives for a number
of reasons. Not all of these reasons are present in Russia and
many other countries of the world. Russia, for example, sits
in Europe and Asia and borders some of the most dangerous and
populous countries in the world. Huge criminal organizations
operate within her borders. And Russia doesn't have a
tradition of democracy. Their past is known more for the
"Tartar Yoke" than a Bill of Rights.
Putin,
actually, is doing a masterfully delicate job at guiding
Russia from communism to free market capitalism. It may not
always be pretty, considering the Russian mafia organizations,
the terrorists in Chechnya, the vestiges of communism and the
like that Putin must contend with. Moreover, the Russian
people, because of their history, may be more inclined to
prefer stronger central authority. So lighten up on Putin.
Russia needs stronger central authority at the present time
as it continues to make the transition to freedom.
Bush and
many others seem to believe that unless a country is totally
democratic like ours, then it's not quite right. I say, so
what even if it is true. We need Russia and many other
countries as our friends more than we need them to be
perfectly democratic. In fact, Russia should be one of our
best buds. Like the US, Russia is fighting Islamic extremists.
Russia is European. They are largely Caucasian, like the US
(not Middle Eastern, Asian, etc.). The Russians are also
largely Christian (Eastern Orthodox). We have many
commonalities and many common enemies.
Remember
the old days of the Soviet Empire? The Soviets were badasses.
No one hijacked their planes. Their military was feared
throughout the world, what with their SPETSNAZ, BMPs, AKs,
T-72s, MiGs and ICBMs. We (in the US) can have what's left of these badasses
on our side if we can cut Russia and Putin a
little slack on the democracy thing.
The US should always promote democracy and help nations to
achieve democracy. But ramming it down a country's throat is
not productive, and it turns potential partners into
adversaries.

Mexico Has an Illegal Alien Problem
It's
sort of ironic. Many Mexicans aren't too happy about the
hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens arriving each year
over the southern border
from Central American countries, according to an interesting
article in the February 2008 edition of
National Geographic Magazine. Meanwhile, on the northern
border, Mexico's drug war is heating up
as thousands of heavily-armed federal troops take the fight to
drug cartel members.
It's a
shame that some of the Drug War and associated vices are
spilling onto American soil, for the US has the resources to
effectively shut down the border using troops and fences. But
the US does comparatively little, though it's trying to do
more. But more isn't good enough. Each year, hundreds of
thousands of Mexicans enter the United States illegally. True, many
of these illegals are hardworking and will gladly perform
hardscrabble work that many Americans wouldn't even think
about doing. However, many other illegals are bringing a host
of vices to America, including illegal drugs, drug use and
abuse, alcohol abuse, thievery, human smuggling, organized
criminal activity and a drug war to name a
few.
Walk the
streets of Dallas, where I walk the streets as a letter
carrier for the USPS, and you'll see firsthand the dangers
these illegals bring to America. Walk through an illegal alien
apartment complex and you'll probably smell marijuana. Walk
through an illegal alien apartment complex and be careful not
to step on broken beer bottles on a Saturday or Sunday
morning after a night of loud, drunken, parking lot revelry. Walk the residential streets behind an illegal alien
apartment complex and you'll see a row of for sale or for
lease signs because the Americans are tired of having their
homes broken into. Walk the halls of the local elementary
school and you'll find 97 percent immigrant children being
funded by 100 percent Americans. Walk the halls of the local
middle school and you'll find gangs, pre-teen sex and drugs,
including $2 cheese heroin which has killed more than 20 youths
in the Dallas area in the last two years. And around the
middle school you'll find a neighborhood brimming with Mexican
graffiti. Better be finished with your walk
before dark, though, because that's when the gunfire starts.
Drive the
streets of Dallas, and you better be careful too. Dallas is awash with old
pickup trucks and rusty vans driven by uninsured drunken
Mexicans who never had a day of drivers ed in their life. (You
better leave early for work in the morning, because there's
always a traffic wreck on the freeway that involves an
illegal.) But
if you're cut off while driving, it's best to look the other
way and go on about your business, because these people are
illegal. They got to the States illegally, they were employed
illegally, and they got their lawnmower for their landscaping
business illegally. They use illegal drugs and drive
illegally. And some of them illegally have a small-caliber
handgun in the glove compartment. (I've seen it firsthand, up
close and personal.) You don't want to become a part of their illegal,
underground world.
Deliver
their mail, and you'll see a host of unpaid medical bills from
area public hospitals, and then you'll start to see how
illegals are bankrupting city, county and state entities. And
while these illegals are being paid with hundred dollar bills
in their underground economy, Americans are paying hundreds if
not thousands in extra taxes and insurance to fill the gap.
The damage
has already been done to America. Literally, tens of millions
of illegals have come to America during the last several
decades, denigrating American society across the land. It
would be great if we could deport every last illegal. But
rounding up millions of illegals is just not doable,
politically expedient, or morally acceptable. After all,
Americans have profited handsomely from their toil and sweat,
and we looked the other way as they lived, got married, had
American citizen babies and took over entire neighborhoods and
cities across the American Southwest. Plus, for the last seven
years, illegals have been welcomed by a Spanish-speaking
president who did something by doing nothing in allowing
millions of illegals into the US. We're big free-market
capitalists here at MNN, but even we see this inaction as a
naked attempt to supply American Big Business with cheap labor
and depressed wages while stoking the American economy with
demand for new housing, etc. (For his looking-the-other way,
Bush thinks these illegals will someday find their way to the
Republican Party. Yeah, right!)
Instead of mass deportations, here at MNN we support troops on
the border and an impenetrable wall from the Gulf of Mexico to
the Pacific Ocean along the entire US/Mexican border. Once
sealed, the United States should reluctantly give amnesty to
every remaining otherwise non-criminal illegal in the land and present them with
their "Welcome to America" gift - a taxpayer identification
card!
